Andrew Chalk & Daisuke Suzuki
The Days After
Faraway Press CD

Available through the Helen Scarsdale Agency: $20.00

Having contributed field recordings to some of the early Ora recordings and published the spectacular Chalk / Coleclough Sumac LP, Daisuke Suzuki has enjoyed a warm friendship with Andrew Chalk over the years. Beginning in 1995, the two began a slow-moving collaboration that culminated in a quietly released micro-edition CD-R in 2003. Four years later, Chalk has now re-packaged The Days After with his meticulously hand-printed artwork and a longer mix of one of the pieces. Chalk’s impressionist drift of utterly beguiling and subtly eerie dronework is a prominent component to the two long-form pieces, with Suzuki contributing field recordings and gongs. Much of what is found is not far from the best moments of Chalk’s Mirror recordings with Christoph Heemann, as all of the sounds organically meander with a purposeful, grandiose torpor. The two offer a pleasant surprise some 12 minutes into the first track, by allowing the drone ellipses to fade away in favor of a gentle duet of variously plucked strings, paralleling the spectral psychedelia of Keiji Haino’s Nijiumu recordings. Very well done, indeed!
