"Despite his essentially solitary nature, Stapleton thrives on collaboration. Virtually all his albums have been enlivened by the contributions of friends and family. His 1992 duo album with Tony Wakeford, Revenge of the Selfish Shellfish, also recorded by Colin Potter, is one of his more accessible recordings. Held together by Wakeford's hypnotic guitar parts, the songs are soaked in a choral half light that's almost gothic. Stapleton's intention was to involve Wakefold in a totally stupid project, in contrast to the unrelentingly serious work with Sol Invictus. Transposing his face onto the body of a green mollusc for the cover shot undoutably did the trick. 'Stapleton suggested we do something together and booked a week of studio time with Colin Potter,' Wakeford remembers. 'I had a few lyrics and Steve had hired an Emulator and it was just a week of pissing about really. When it came out it fell between two stools. A lot of Nurse fans hated it because I was on it and it had guitars, and a lot of Sol Invictus fans hated it because it was a bit off the wall. Still, over the years the people who have ears have picked up on it.' -- David Keenan England's Hidden Reverse |
